The Mycologist: unlock route, kit and 1.0 build
Checked against the 1.0 patch notes (20 Oct 2026), Power Up Gaming's Mycologist guide (21 Oct 2026) and the achievement list.
She is the only employee you have to rescue, and the one whose kit runs on a meter: Infection builds when you take damage or use her movement, powers her crowd control, and costs maximum health if you let it stack. Here is the unlock, the three abilities, and the build the 1.0 guides are recommending.
How to unlock the Mycologist
Finish Expedition Alpha, the 1.0 special assignment. The mission appears in the HUB mission select as a new special assignment; complete it and she joins the roster in the HUB.
The 1.0 announcement is unusually direct about it: But first, you'll have to rescue her in Expedition Alpha. The achievement list repeats the point in five words — Rescue the Mycologist — and counts it as one of the objectives standing between you and 100%.
The mission ends in a boss fight, and the unlock is not finished when the boss dies. Break one side of its shell, destroy the exposed core, then walk to her landing spot and use the Switch Employee interaction. The full route is on the Expedition Alpha page.

Who she is
The studio introduces her as a member of the first expedition to New Atlas after the fungal outbreak. That is a deliberate piece of world-building: the Hazard Crew you play as are disposable contractors, and she was there before the contractors — which is why finding her is a rescue rather than a recruitment.
It also explains the design shape. Every other employee is a tool you are handed at the start. She is a person the plot withholds, so her kit is allowed to be stranger than the four you begin with.
The kit: three abilities, one resource
Infection — the passive that defines her
Infection builds when you take damage or use Sporelift. At low stacks it strengthens her utility; stack it too high and it cuts your maximum health, so the loop is to spend it and let it fall rather than hoard it.
The studio's own description calls it a manageable resource that gives fun synergies to her upgrades and combat pacing — which is accurate in a way that matters for building her: her upgrades are gated on spending or holding Infection, so her rhythm is about when to spend it, not whether to apply it.
Sporelift
Hold jump to launch upward. The longer you hold, the higher she goes, and the ability adds Infection while it lifts her. It is vertical movement for reaching a ledge or leaving a pack, not a horizontal dash.
Fungal Skewer
Summons fungal spikes out of the ground that immobilise what they hit. You can spend Infection for additional damage on the spikes, which is where her burst comes from: pin a pack, then pay the meter.
The Amalgamation upgrade
The studio confirmed she gets an Amalgamation-exclusive character upgrade. That is the one hard build target on the page: whatever the Amalgamation drops for her is designed to be part of her kit, not an optional extra.
The best Mycologist build in 1.0
Power Up Gaming's guide (21 October 2026) frames her as a hybrid mobility and crowd-control specialist, and the weapon list follows that logic — everything either holds enemies still or profits from them being still.
| Piece | Why it fits |
|---|---|
| Diffraction Driver | Ion scattergun unlocked at level 10; alt-fire spins the cone tighter and longer, which is exactly what you want on targets pinned by Skewer |
| Snowball Grenade | Cryo grenade from the X11-B moon missions; freeze plus immobilise is the strongest control pair she has |
| Cycler | Elemental or infinite-ammo setups give her sustained damage between Skewer casts |
| Plate Launcher | Area denial, and in 1.0 its plates can heal the player standing on them |
Aggressive alternatives from the same guide: Swarm Launcher, Shocklance, Globbler and Carver. For grenades, Voltaic, Caustic and Incendiary all work, because an elemental cocktail lands cleanly on a target that cannot walk out of it.
Upgrade priority: Sporelift and Infection buildup first, then Fungal Skewer. Her tree starts at Rare rarity in 1.0, so the early picks are stronger than the old Standard starters — and since 1.0 infusion scales stats with pattern size, keep her signature patterns large rather than shaving them to fit.
Team shape: Bruiser, Glider or Wrangler alongside her. She is at her best in a three- or four-player squad, locking down a pack while the others apply damage — and the 1.0 Population Control mission, which asks you to clear dense enemy areas, is built for exactly that.
Is she better than Glider or Wrangler?
She is not a replacement for either. Glider remains the strongest early pick, largely because Rocket Salvo works when your ammo does not; Wrangler remains the strongest at the top threat levels once upgraded. The Mycologist is the crowd-control slot neither of them fills.
If you already have a working main, unlocking her costs you a mission, not a restart — weapons and upgrades are shared across the account. Chase the Amalgamation upgrade first, then judge her on your own runs.
