Bruiser: the doorway tank
Checked against the 1.0 patch notes (20 Oct 2026) and the Mycopunk wiki (last edited 22 Oct 2026).
The best Bruiser build in Mycopunk is not the shield-and-slam tank the class is advertised as. It is Modular Construction: shatter the shield into six cubes, then let the shield itself carry you around the room. The tank build still works — it is just the second-best thing you can do with this employee.
The best Bruiser build in 1.0
The community wiki's Bruiser write-up is blunt: the strongest builds do not behave like the tank the class advertises. They are built on one Oddity.
| Upgrade | Rarity | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Modular Construction | Oddity | Your single shield becomes six small solid cubes with five extra charges. |
| Backboost | Rare | Activating the shield projector launches you backward — the movement tool the kit does not ship with. |
| Unconditional Protector | Epic | Your shield grants an overshield to every nearby player when placed. |
| Liquid Cooling + Thermal Paste | Rare + Standard | Both cut shield-projector cooldown, and both can be stacked. |
| For Good Measure | Exotic | A second Nose Dive charge. |
Read the loop: six charges refresh fast, every placement launches you, every placement also hands the squad an overshield. The cubes are not cover — the wiki is explicit that they offer no real defensive value — so what you are buying is uptime on the shield's on-use effects, not a wall. That is why cooldown stacking is in the build instead of damage.
The page documenting it was last edited on 22 October 2026, two days after 1.0 — and a 1.0.3 hotfix addressed Modular Construction's appearance for other players, which is as close to a version stamp as this build gets.
The kit: a wall and a slam
The Hard-Light Projector throws up a shield that stuns enemies and reflects projectiles. Game Rant's ranking adds the part that decides the employee's role: it is a great shield not only for the Bruiser but for any allies behind you. Nothing else in the game does that. The Glider flies away from danger, the Scrapper gives everyone a pole to swing from, but only the projector puts a surface between the squad and incoming fire.
Nose Dive is the damage half — a jump that turns into a slam. The same ranking describes it as dealing a lot of damage and clearing waves of enemies in seconds, which is the sentence that put the Bruiser in the high tier at launch.
The cost is stated just as plainly: the Bruiser may be a bit slower than the other options. No movement ability, no dash, no flight.

The tank build most guides give you
This is the stack that a forum player posted and that the build source cited below records, and it is built around surviving the attention you ask for:
- Optical Attraction — hold F to gain damage resistance and draw the attention of all enemies. The wiki puts the resistance at a massive 80%, which is what makes the taunt survivable rather than suicidal.
- Launch Reserves — refunds Nose Dive charge, so the slam stays available as both damage and re-positioning.
- Frog Legs or Springboard — fixes the mobility problem, which is the real problem.
- One-Two Punch — a landed Nose Dive boosts your next Hard-Light Projector. It is the one piece that makes the two abilities talk to each other instead of taking turns.
What 1.0 changed
- Optical Attraction — aggro distance 120-160 → 400-500. A large buff to the taunt build, and the single biggest reason to re-test the employee.
- Frog Legs — Standard to Rare, minimum leap +21% (up from +10%).
- Get Off Me and Hard-Light Prison changed patterns; Killcode gained a default controller binding and a larger explosion, and now rolls with a random element.
One number worth knowing: 15 pips
Hard-Light Prison takes a 15-pip pattern, which the wiki calls the single largest upgrade in the game — with M.I.R.V., Infinity Burn and Cluster Bomb tied for second at 10 pips each. If you want to run it, budget for pattern infusion, because it will not fit a normal grid otherwise.
The same write-up warns that every Bruiser shield blocks attacks from outside, including your allies' — so a prison large enough to trap an enemy is also large enough to eat a teammate's Globbler glob or Plate Launcher plate. That is a design consequence, not a bug, and it is the reason the upgrade is a niche pick rather than a default.
Holding a doorway, in practice
The shield reflects projectiles and stuns what touches it, and it protects whoever is behind it — so the useful placement is not "in front of the Bruiser" but "between the squad and the angle they are being shot from". That is a reading of the ability, not a tested technique; no group run has been recorded for it.
Two consequences follow from the same reading, and both are inference:
- The taunt build and the shield build are the same build. Optical Attraction pulls fire toward you; the projector is what makes that fire survivable. Running one without the other is why some players report the Bruiser feeling passive.
- Nose Dive is your reset, not your opener. Launch Reserves exists because the slam is worth having twice — once to clear the wave that pushed you off the door, once to get back to it.
Treat both as things to test rather than as settled technique. They are not in a source.
When the Bruiser is the wrong pick
- You are playing solo. The projector's best property is covering someone. Alone, you are paying the mobility tax for half an ability.
- The squad needs damage at range. Nose Dive is a slam; it wants enemies close, and the fights that kill squads happen at distance.
- You want to move without spending a grid slot. Glider flies, Scrapper swings, Wrangler dashes. The Bruiser arrives last and hits hardest when it does.
Next in the roster
Glider for support and flight, Wrangler for late-game damage, Scrapper for team mobility, the Mycologist for the 1.0 unlock. The employee index compares all five, and the build guide has the rest of the grids.
