Judge a mod by its shape, not its power
A small, mediocre upgrade that plugs a two-cell hole is usually worth more than a great one that forces four empty cells elsewhere. Wasted grid space is the only real loss in Mycopunk.
Field guide / New Atlas
Mycopunk is a four-player fungus-clearing looter shooter from Pigeons at Play, out of Early Access on 20 October 2026. This codex tracks the parts the game does not explain: the unlock chain, the hex grid, and what 1.0 quietly changed.

Four ways in, depending on whether you just installed the game or you are stuck on a pattern that will not rotate.
Three rules that decide whether the game clicks at hour two or gets refunded at minute forty.

Systems · 9 minKnow what every drop is forGats, Romphus, Gussula, Beezia, Yeuco, Saxonite — and which ones you are hoarding for nothing.
Systems · 7 minThree of the strongest search terms for this game point at one loop: a mission, a rescue, an employee. They are not three pages — they are one cluster.
New in 1.0. A rescue mission on the 1.0 content path — the patch notes name it, the achievement list confirms it, and the exact room order is still being verified.
Step 02 · Employee“A member of the first expedition to New Atlas after the fungal outbreak.” Rescued in Alpha, then playable with Sporelift, Fungal Skewer and Infection.
The most common complaint about Mycopunk is the first hour. Almost everyone who quits does it before hour two — and almost everyone who stays says the same thing about what changed.

You can be a healer, a shield, or a bomb — and the game will let you try all three at once. Spreading upgrades across five directions gives you five invisible bonuses instead of one effect you can feel.
Solo enemies stay accurate at range and big creatures take forever without someone pulling aggro. Lower the threat level without guilt: the setting labelled “recommended” is not the easy one.
You are a robot reject hired by the SAXON corporation and dropped onto New Atlas to clear a planet-wide fungal outbreak. Missions are short, loud and built for four: you extract, you spend, you bolt more shapes onto your guns, and you go back down.
The hook is not the shooting — it is the grid. Every employee and every weapon has its own hexagonal upgrade board, upgrades arrive as patterns of cells, and the only rule is available space. The studio's own line is “whatever upgrades you can fit in are fair game,” which is either freedom or a trap depending on how you build.
It is also, by the numbers, a well-liked game with a divided one: Steam sits at Very Positive across 4,215 reviews, while the Simplified Chinese review pool (218 reviews in October 2026) sits near 48%. That gap is worth knowing before you buy.
What changed most recently, and what 1.0 rewrote under everyone's builds.
Cranius and Bunker Buster now unlock correctly. The relay-tower Fulfillment and the Saxito bag counter were also fixed. If you finished either objective during launch week and got nothing, this is why.
Patch notes ↗Mycologist, the X11-B moon region, infusion that scales with pattern size, seven new weapon upgrades, eleven turbocharges, two renamed grenades, and a reworked HUB with hats. Your Early Access infusions did not survive intact.
What changed →Every page lists what it checked and when. Where a claim comes from a single source, it says so; where it rests on none, the claim is not published — because a guide that guesses is worse than a guide that stays quiet.
The four questions that come up before anything else does.
